The Art of Storytelling: The Options Are Endless
Writing weaves together words, ideas, themes, and imagery to tell a story. Whether you’re narrating the clashing of alien races, crafting an international espionage thriller, or even writing a cookbook (have you seen those intros? come on…), you are telling a story.
But what counts as a story?
What if you’re playing Dungeons & Dragons or another tabletop RPG? You are crafting themes, plots, and stories for your players if you’re the Game Master. Often, you’re doing this on the fly. Are you any less of a storyteller because you weave your tale through improvisation? We say no. Improvisational storytelling is still storytelling and judging from the popularity of groups like Dimension 20 and Critical Role, it’s hard to deny people like their stories.
Now what about if you’re using AI? “ChatGPT, please write me an internationally best-selling novel” won’t yield an international bestseller, even if you ask nicely (and you should always ask the AI nicely… you know, just in case). When using AI, you still have to have an idea. You still have to help craft the themes, direct the plot, and create the characters. So yes, you’re still telling a story. You’ve just got a partner to help you write. You’ve got a co-storyteller but one you’re probably a lot less likely to have creative arguments with.
Then what about graphic novels? There’s a group of people who are going to dismiss them as glorified comics but they need every bit of a script as any other story. You only have dialogue for the most part and have to convey actions, intent, and meaning through visual images. This is multidimensional storytelling at a minimum otherwise you basically have a coloring book that someone completed for you.
